Explore Japan and get into the spirit of the Tokyo Olympics with tea!
Tea was first introduced into Japan in the 8th century by Buddhist monks studying in China, but did not catch on until around the 12th century. Japan is primarily known for producing deliciously grassy green teas and matchas.
For a classic green tea, Japanese Sencha will give you that rich, umami flavor profile. Uji Gyokuro is the highest grade of tea produced in Japan, produced only from leaves picked in lay May or early June. Hojicha is a roasted green tea with more of a robust earthy flavor reminiscent of Hazelnuts. Genmaicha is a tea blend that also carries a nutty flavor from toasted rice kernels mixed with Sencha leaves. For a more flavorful cup of tea, Sakura Blossom is a floral-fruity blend of white tea with rosehips, hibiscus, & rose petals that is reminiscent of Japan's cherry blossom season.
Japan is also known for gifting us with Matcha! Shade grown green tea leaves are expertly cared for before harvesting and grinding into a fine powder. Just mix about 2g ( 0.5 tsp) with 8oz water and whisk away! For the best Matcha experience, you want to choose ceremonial grade matchas. Ceremonial is the highest quality matcha available, and previously reserved for the Matcha Tea Ceremony.
